Tulsa time capsule Plymouth
What dawned on me today was how contemporary I am with this car, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere. In 1959, I was born into a family with a 1958 Chrysler Royale–which we had until 1970. In fact, it was the “good car” until 1969. The magnetic, plastic Jesus statue on the dashboard, because the dash was metal. The pushbutton shifter.
Sort of death in reverse. The car is a rusty, muddy, mess. But we’re looking it up on YouTube and blogging it. Chrysler was bought by the Germans, for chrissake, and they want to give it back.
Also, leads to the Stephen King movie Christine. I probably thought that movie wasn’t worth thinking about at the time. Other movies that show-off late 50s Chryslers are North By Northwest and It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad World.
Also, The East German car the Trabant is 50. They’re not rusted, because they’re made of plastic.
